Pennfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame Welcomes the Class of 2021 …

The Pennfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame welcomed five new members to this special club last Saturday, September 11, 2021.  The HOF class of 2021 included M. Arther Clark II (’93), Scott Clothier (’92), Brent Cobb, Jr. (’87), Larry Crandall, and Steve Grimes (’85).

The 6th annual Hall of Fame weekend kicked off on Friday, September 10th prior to the varsity football game against Coldwater High School with a pregame reception at 5:30pm.  The newest members of the HOF were then introduced to the crowd at halftime.  On Saturday evening, September 11th they were formally inducted at a banquet at the Riverside Golf & Banquet Center.

M. Arther Clark II was a four sport participant at Pennfield High School.  He played football, basketball, baseball and ran track & field.  He earned 8 varsity letters in his career.  He set a school record in the long jump and qualified for the state track meet on multiple occasions.  He was a member of the 1991 state championship football team.  He was an All conference and All city performer in football and basketball for two years and he was named the Battle Creek Enquirer Male Athlete of the Year in 1993.

Scott Clothier was a three sport letterwinner at Pennfield.  He played football, baseball and wrestled.  He earned ten varsity letters in his career.  He was an All conference and All City performer in all three sports and he was a captain in both football and wrestling.  He was a member of the 1991 state football championship team and a member of the 1992 state wrestling championship team.  He also set the school record for tackles in a season.

Brent Cobb, Jr. was a two sport participant during his days at Pennfield.  He ran cross country and track & field.  He earned 8 varsity letters.  He set school records in several events.  He was an All conference performer in both sports all four years.  He was an All City performer in cross country and track seven times.  He was named team MVP in both sports four times.  He was a captain for both sports.  He was a state meet qualifier four times.  He later served an assistant track coach for Pennfield Schools for six seasons.

Larry Crandall has been a community member of Pennfield Township since 1968.  He has helped with the chain crew at varsity football games for over 50 years.  He was a member of the Pennfield Athletic Boosters for several decades.  He is often remembered for clearing the snow off the football field with his own tractor in 1992 to make it possible for an MHSAA state football quaterfinal game to be played.  He helped lay the water line under the current track during construction and he assisted in painting the concession stand at the football field.

Steve Grimes was a three sport participant during his days at Pennfield.  He played football, basketball and baseball.  He earned 7 varsity letters.  He was an All Conference performer in all three sports.  He was an All city performer in all three sports.  He was team MVP in all three sports.  He also coached football at Pennfield as an assistant coach for 20 seasons.  He coached boys basketball for 25 years, eight of those years he was the varsity head coach.  He coached varsity softball for 12 seasons and amassed 240 career victories and led his teams to four MHSAA district championships.  He was named City and District Coach of the Year on multiple occasions.

Congratulations to all these individuals for their induction into the Pennfield Schools Athletic Hall of Fame.

Hall of Fame Nomination

The Pennfield Hall of Fame Committee accepts nominations beginning October 1st through March 1st each year, for the Panther Athletic Hall of Fame. A committee will then review the nominations and a new class of Hall of Fame members will be introduced during a Fall Football game and banquet. Any individual is entitled to nominate a past Pennfield athlete, coach or community member who you feel is deserving of this honor.
